End of Gardening,  2009

By Delores Miller

It is the end of gardening, 2009.  The frost is on the pumpkin as the saying goes.

So so season,  cool dry summer, followed by a beautiful  September until Jack Frost visited on the 30th.

High hopes when we planted in mid May, lettuce, peas, green beans, potatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and tomatoes.  Little patches of ground scattered around the farm.

And then the flowers, lots of them, tulips, big red dahlias, zinnias, marigolds, morning glory.

Because it was so cool, and even though we had plenty of blossoms and bees, few cucumbers and zucchini developed.  We did not understand that, although the neighbors also complained.

So it was in the beautiful Indian summer days of September the bounty produced.  Everyone's garden knew the frost was coming and multiplied.

We had an over abundance of green beans and tomatoes, the
very small red and yellow cherry type.  Neighbors and friends
cringed when they saw us coming down the road.  They also
had the big tomatoes and pawned them on us.

Russ went for a walk and came home overloaded with twelve zucchini and large juicy roma tomatoes.

Now the freezer is full of zucchini/banana bread and sealed jars of salsa.

Looking forward to the Gardening season of 2010.
